Nuts (Ajil)

“Nuts”, or “Ajil” as the Persians call it, is a generic word that is defined differently by botanists & the general population. Scientifically, the word “nuts” refers to dried fruits that have a grain inside which have hardened ovarian walls. Therefore, according to this definition, walnuts, almonds, cashew, walnuts, hazelnuts, chestnuts, chickpeas, pecans (which are similar to walnuts), macadamia & Brazilian nuts and coconuts fall into the category of nuts.

Based on the scientific definition, peanuts are not in the category of this nuts and are in fact a member of the legume family. But of course, they are studied with the group of nuts because of their many similarities in nutritional & structural value to nuts. But most people refer to most of the snacks found in nut confectioneries at nuts. so they include foods such as sesame, sunflower seed kernels, pumpkin seed kernels, dried apricots, soybeans, and dates. Coconuts, on the other hand, are considered a type of fruit. But it's good to know that some of these foods or snacks are actually dried fruits (such as dried dates). others are considered to be seeds (such as sunflower and sesame seeds). and some are classified as legumes (such as soybeans).

Traditional Persian “Ajil”

Since long ago, Ajil has become a symbol of the Iranian tradition in such a manner that many ancient rituals & ceremonies such as the Persian New Year (Nowrouz), the night of Yalda (the longest night in the year) and Chahar Shanbeh Soori (the festival on the last Wednesday eve of the year) are meaningless without the presence of Ajil as one of the main snacks served. Apart from their traditional values, the nutritional & health values associated with these nuts and their delicious taste lead them to be recognized as some of the most desirable snacks for youngsters and the elderly alike.

Today, the recognition of Ajil among Iranians has gone far beyond celebrations & festivals and actually became part of their religious beliefs. In many religious ceremonies (which usually women performed) a special type of Ajil (which is referred to as Ajil-e Moshkel Gosha, they believe it helps them to solve their problems and their prayers would be answered.

Roasted Mixed Nuts

The manufacturer often roasts them in order to improve their aroma, taste & crunchiness. Roasting nuts means cooking them using dry heat, which cooks the nuts evenly on all sides. Most of them are roasted without their shell (except for pistachios, which are often roasted inside their shells). Meanwhile, raw ones have not been roasted & are generally healthier. In addition, roasting methods are sometimes used to separate the shells from their kernels. This is a very typical method of shelling cashews & the main reason why they’re almost never sold raw.

High Protein Nuts

Generally speaking, nuts have a high nutritional value but some are particularly nutritious in terms of the amount of protein they have. Peanuts, even though they are not scientifically classified as a type of nut, contain a high amount of vegetable protein and also other nutrients. and are much favored by bodybuilders and professional athletes and widely used to enhance their rich diets.

Apart from their high protein concentration, peanuts provide high amounts of calories. (up to 600 Calories per 100 grams) and other beneficial components such as Polyphenols, anti-oxidants, flavonoids, and amino acids. Research shows that all of these compounds are very beneficial to the health of the human body and they also help boost your immune system.

The Different Types of Mixed Nuts

Mixed nuts are producing, selling, and consuming in many different types – most of which do not have a precise name and are merely different combinations of nuts. However, some of the names follow the two naming methods below:

1- The first method is choosing the name of the nuts based on their use, for example, the Ajil-e Moshkel Gosha.

2- The second method selects the name of the Ajil based on the combination of nuts in it and its components such as Salty, Sweet, Spicy, and Four Nuts.

Hazelnuts

Hazelnuts make up a very delicious & healthy snack and are a great addition to a number of dishes. They are extremely high in Vitamin E, healthful fats, protein & dietary fiber. Consuming a balanced amount of hazelnuts is the best way to support healthy bowel movements, reduce weight gain, protect against cell damage, lower cholesterol levels, improve insulin sensitivity, support heart health, reduce inflammation and improve sperm count in men.
