Religions

Muslims, Zoroastrianism, Jewish, ...

The official religion of Iran is Islam and 98% of Iranians are Muslim. Islam is divided into two main branches, Shia and Sunni

More than 90 percent of Muslims follow the Twelver or Imamiyyah belief of the Shia religion. the division between the two sects dates from a disagreement over the successor to the founder of Islam (the prophet Muhammad) after his death. Shiites recognize the prophet's cousin and son-in-law, Ali, as his successor and thereafter the direct descendants of Ali. Sunnis, however, believed that political leadership and respect within the community were the most important prerequisites for a successor. They recognized the rulers known as caliphs who went on to form the Umayyad dynasty in Damascus.
