A Brief History
Bandar-e Bushehr, commonly known as Bushehr, Bushir, Bushire, or Bushahr, is a port city in southwestern Iran and the capital of Bushehr province. It is located at the Persian Gulf's head, at the northern extremity of a flat, short peninsula with tidal marshes connecting it to the mainland. When Nader Shah created a naval base in Bandar-e Bushehr in 1734 to dominate the Persian Gulf's periphery, the city grew to prominence. The English and Dutch East India companies moved their trading posts from Bandar-e-Abbas to Bushehr in the 1780s.
In the nineteenth century, it became the home of a British political resident as well as various European consulates. With the construction of Khorramshahr as the main port for the Persian Gulf by the Iranian government in the 1960s and 1970s, it lost its commercial importance. Bandar-e Bushehr is still used as a port, though Bandar-e Abbas and Bandar-e Khomeyni (old Bandar Bushehr) have surpassed it.
Bandar-e Bushehr has an exterior anchorage that is deep yet exposed, as well as an interior anchorage. It has road connections to Bandar-e Khomeyni, Bandar-e Abbas, and other cities, as well as air and road connections to Tehran via Shiraz and Esfahan. Bandar-e Bushehr is presently a regional oil distribution center, as well as a college with a degree program and a fisheries center. The construction of a thermoelectric power plant aided the expansion of the food processing and engineering sectors. Exports include dried fruits, gums, carpets, and raw cotton. During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, the city was severely damaged, although it was largely restored in the 1990s. 169,966 people lived there in 2006.
